Compassionately written by an experienced team of professionals, this book offers parents and families essential information about the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of sex development, or DSD.DSD refers to medical conditions, usually discovered at birth, in which there is disagreement between a person's genetic sex (i.e., chromosomes) and the appearance of the person's external or internal reproductive structures. After their child is diagnosed with DSD, parents need answers to a host of questions, including• What is DSD, why does it occur, how is it identified, and how is it treated?• Did we do something to cause our child's DSD?• Is my baby a boy or a girl?• Will my child grow up to be normal and healthy?• Does my child need surgery? This concise book answers parents' questions in a reassuring and forthright way, giving affected individuals, their families, and their health care providers a current and evidence-based picture of DSD. It offers clear explanations of how newborns with DSD are evaluated, diagnosed, and treated; describes the different kinds of DSD; and pays close attention to both psychosocial and medical aspects of DSD. This guide also includes information about the importance of support groups and education for affected individuals and their families. In their daily work, the authors treat, support, and educate people with DSD and their families. This resource gives parents and families access to the authors' expertise so they can reach a meaningful understanding of their child's DSD and make informed decisions about their child's health.

This review is written in the context of low price and standardization of information. It is a review of the specific 2012 edition I read. The price and the fact that it contains basic clinical information regarding less dangerous intersex conditions both raise my review from one star to two. Since this book is one of the Johns Hopkins Press series the information it presents was vetted by peer reviewers. Much of it is generally readable and it is presented in logical order. (Regarding naming there are two possibilities. Should this be a book on 'disorders of sex development' or on 'intersex conditions'? Obviously the authors favor the former; I favor the latter, particularly for a book which doesn't mention the transgender disorders. Such are disorders of sexual development but not necessarily of anatomy and hormones . Also for I think the latter is better for talking to families. Somehow it seems kinder to tell someone their child has a "condition" than a "disorder".)It would appear to be mostly a middling opinion on the subject as of its publication year, 2012, not too conservative nor radical to irritate most readers. It is not more deeply technical that would be understandable to a med student just starting their clinical training and it may help the student expand their data base. Consider it like a "Cliff's Notes" level text. The writers or publishers chose to call it a guide for families and physicians. It is neither. Its presentation is not clearly a consumer explanation nor a medical text. It has less jargon than any teratology text I've read but enough to totally confuse anyone who hasn't had a basic level of training in human anatomy and physiology. It would appear to be written to be reassuring to readers however some of its phraseology would appear off putting to the nonprofessional reader. There is a good focus on the common conditions which are mostly benign but which frighten medical and nursing students, parents and schoolteachers. This is the forte of the book. There is a pretty complete discussion of the process of how the attending physicians go about evaluating and triaging the conditions. There is a fair handling of some serious risks such as cancers however for mental illnesses there is a strange lack of information. As a specific instance there is not mention of the risks of the depression and suicide problems which plague intersex teens and adults. No book should be published which minimizes this since the ballpark figure rate of lifetime suicide attempts is about 20% of people with intersex conditions, compared to about 4% of the rest of the population. Not wanting to mix a discussion about intersex conditions into the current social uproar about transgender conditions would seem an admirable goal, however the subjects are inextricably mixed in popular culture so there should be some effort to demystify this discussion. Considering that a significant number of readers will be parents or caregivers of transgendered persons and transgender status carries a 40% suicide attempt risk there should be some discussion to distinguish the two subjects. And since gender dysphoria is significantly related to suicide in both transgendered persons and persons with intersex conditions it should have been a primary chapter subject as well.I must mentioned in closing that I did enjoy the book but I had to give it a low rating due to failure to address a major risk of these conditions and to clarify some of the cultural confusions. I hope the authors correct the deficits and press on.
